Narberth - Group One
The Big Canvas - Oct. 6, 2008
There were 12 people, predominantly female, in this lively group. They had lots to say about arts and culture in Philadelphia. Many of the members were close to the arts, one working directly with a local arts group in Phoenixville, as well as local residents such as the parent from Lower Merion.
Some key themes that emerged were the real need for public transportation to arts and culture venues including the Philly Van-Go and maybe even encouraging the public to use Philly Car Share. The group also said that visitors to the city are bowled over by our arts and culture, so why are we our worst enemies? There was skepticism that there is big money out there for arts and cultures.
Common ground:
• Access and transportation to arts and culture is important and needs to be addressed. A “Van-go” bus or even Philly Car Share is a good idea for transportation to the arts.
• Art is an economic engine that adds to our quality of life. We have it and we need to get the word out.
• The entity that would administer the funds should be a diverse group, i.e. not just be those in the arts field, and the membership should rotate each year with overlap for continuity.
• A Web site clearinghouse is important, but some people don’t have computers so we need other means of communication.
• There was a feeling that Philadelphians need an attitude adjustment. There were numerous examples of guests from out-of-town who were very impressed with Philadelphia’s assets.
Insights or action steps:
• The idea of taxes businesses as a source or revenue ignores the problem that we have high business taxes now.
• It is hard to measure outcomes for some of these options.
• The benefits of the arts for youth are clear, and they like building lifelong arts lovers.
